Twenty years have passed since a fire nearly destroyed the artist’s house and all of its contents including the artist’s own work. The paintings that were saved still show the evidence of that event in the deeply embedded layer of soot and dark marks from the splattering of blackened water. It’s important to minimize handling of exposed paintings and to have them examined and treated as soon as possible after this sort of event. The cleaning of this painting was possible but challenging, as the acidic soot particulate had integrated deep into the structure of the paint film.
