When clean isn’t quite clean enough

March 19, 2018

Much more time and effort is necessary for cleaning a painting with impasto or textured brushwork than for one with a smooth surface. Dirt and discolored varnish can become stuck deep in the grooves and crevices of an artist’s brushstrokes, and even at a very minute level relative to the whole, what passes for clean on the surface is still not clean enough to truly show the work at its best or to adequately return the image to what the artist had intended when it was painted.
