More problems with patches. In this case, an overzealous attempt to restore a smallish hole turned into a disaster for the rest of the painting. The inappropriately large and heavy double layers of canvas along with an equally inappropriate adhesive spread across far too large of an area set up conditions that proved disastrous for the paint layer, causing it to lift and flake off where no issues had been before. Worse yet, the adhesive integrated and solidified deep within the fibers of the canvas to the extent that it can now neither be removed nor penetrated to facilitate preservation of the fragile paint that remains.
