Bug Light and Cushing Island

September 27, 2017

Bug Light was so dubbed because of its small size. It was erected in 1855 and watches over a rocky breakwater into Portland Harbor Maine. This small painting by George Hathaway also shows Cushing Island in the background and a glimpse of Fort Scammell and House Island at far left. Various sailing vessels pass by on what appears to be a dark grey day, but as the cleaning of this painting progresses, the sky turns blue and soon it will be smooth sailing.
