The Schooner “Polly” was one of the oldest sailing vessels in commission when it ran aground at Fort McClary in Kittery Point Maine in December of 1890. “...Capt. L.A. Snow of Rockland nearly lost her and his life as well by running ashore at Kittery”. Marine painter George S. Wasson who lived and worked in Kittery Point at the time, documented the event of her rescue in the painting above.
The “Polly” was built in 1805 in Amesbury, Massachusetts and served a long and varied life including privateering in the War of 1812. More information on her remarkable life can be found here:
