What’s behind that stretcher bar?
What’s behind that stretcher bar?

I’ve seen it all. The usual dirt and fluff, wooden stretcher keys, nails, screws, bits of plaster, wallpaper, bug casings, evergreen needles, glitter and holly berries from Christmas decorations, mouse poo. Beach sand. Huh? And now, a new one -- a pistachio shell. Hmm. How’d that get there? No matter, if it’s there it needs to come out. Any and all of these things cause lumps and distortions in the canvas, cracking or losses in the paint layer, and all that fluff can also absorb moisture and ultimately cause the paint and ground to loosen its bond with the canvas and begin to flake.
