What’s in a name? Disfiguring to say the least. In this case, it is not a mechanical problem in the painting’s layers, but a flaw in the layering of the oil paint as it was originally applied and the rate at which these layers dried. Fat over lean, they say and they’re right. Lean over fat will give you trouble every time. Uneven drying of these layers can create shrinkage and separation along a network of crack lines.
