Use of wax

September 15, 2010

Wax has traditionally been used to adhere linings and to re-adhere flaking paint. Sometimes it is successful and other times it is not. In this instance, its use was over-zealous and inappropriate. The structure of this painting is extremely distorted and the old restoration did nothing to address the problems that it presumably intended to remedy. The wax will need to be removed and the plane of the painting corrected to lessen the stresses that are causing the paint to crack and cleave.
