Portsmouth Portraits
July 13, 2018
Opening today at the Athenaeum in Portsmouth NH, is the new exhibition “Painting Portsmouth Notables: 1750 - 1850” “Notables” means Portsmouth citizens of some prominence, but it also means the artists who painted them. The exhibit includes works by colonial portraitists John Greenwood and Joseph Blackburn, Renaissance man and inventor of the telegraph Samuel F.B. Morse, the prolific Joseph Greenleaf Cole, and Boston painter Albert G. Hoit. On view through November 3, 2018.
Also included are two stunning portraits by Chester Harding that I conserved several years ago. The very dandy Theodore Cushing is pictured above, and you can read about my work on the portrait of his uncle Charles Cushing in my blog post from December 2010.
