Handle with Care

March 9, 2016

Remember that paintings are not furniture. The movers piled the precious ancestral portrait into the cargo elevator along with the owner’s heavy Victorian dining room suite, boxes of books and a few more things for efficiency’s sake. What were they thinking? Problem is, they weren’t. A short ride later and the result was a 6” x 4” deeply dented area complete with scraped off paint, two tears and a significant reduction in value. And it could have been much worse. Paintings are extremely fragile and they can become even more fragile with age. Proper packing, transport and storage procedures are critical for their survival. Had this portrait been handled like the fragile object it is and not just another piece of furniture, this mistake would never have happened.
