‘Fish Haul’

November 9, 2013

Charles Woodbury painted everyday scenes from his seaside home in Ogunquit Maine where fishermen were constantly on the move. He was fascinated by the sea and light, and the movement of men, the water and the weather. This painting of fishing shacks suffered from the effects of the elements in his harsh environment, and now at the brink of loss

has been stabilized and restored.

These details of the painting’s upper left

corner show the worst of the structural

deterioration of the paint layer. Careful

consolidation of the paint from the front

and the back eliminated the need for a

complete lining, and as long as its future

environment is more stable than its past

one, the painting should be safe for many

years to come.

The detail here at right shows the same

area after treatment.
