Tear repair

October 25, 2011

The inscription on the reverse side of the portrait prohibited the application of a patch which would normally have been the means of securing the jagged 1 1/2” tear. Rather than obscure the inscription, the area was flattened and the broken fibers of the canvas were realigned and bonded with an adhesive which also allowed a slight stiffening of the area to keep it flat without the benefit of a supporting patch.
